Bayazid II

 Bayazid II.

The eighth ruler of the Ottoman Empire.

Born: 3 December 1447, Damotka (Turkey).

 Died: May 26, 1512.

Bayazid was the son and successor of Muhammad Sani, the eight-month ruler of the Ottoman Empire in Turkey.  In his father's life Amasia ruled while his younger brother Cham ruled Kermania.  After the death of their father, the two began to fight for the throne.

Yen Cheri (government army) installed Bayazid on the throne.  Cham raised the banner of rebellion but was defeated and went to Egypt.  From there he returned with the help of the Egyptian army, but this time too he lost his temper.  This time he turned to Rhodes.  There he was imprisoned and after thirteen years of captivity the prince was killed.

The reign of Bayazid II does not matter in terms of government conquests and expansion of the empire.

In 1483, the taxing state of Herzegovina was permanently annexed by Bayezid to the Ottoman Empire.  During this time small battles with Hungary continued for many years.  Eventually the two governments reconciled.

In 1484, during the Moldavian expedition, Bayezid also captured Qila-e-Kaliya and Qala-e-Kerman.  However, the battle against the Republic of Venice in 1498 was more important.  Failures in the war against the Mamluks led Bayazid to declare war on Venice after re-arming his army.

Thus, in 1499, he defeated the Venetian fleet and captured the port of Lipanto.

In 1501, the Venetians renounced all Turkish occupation and made peace.  Meanwhile, the leader of the Safavid sect, Ismail Safavi, started a new series of conquests in 1499 and conquered all of Iran.  Thus, Bayazid feared that large areas of Asia Minor would be out of obedience to the Turks.  In view of this threat, Bayezid in 1502 ordered the transfer of many elements from Asia Minor to the conquered territories of Moravia.

At the same time, a power struggle arose in the Ottoman Empire.  Bayazid's three sons decided to ascend the throne in front of their father.

Bayazid wanted his son Ahmed to succeed him, but his son, Saleem, was popular in the army.  He led his army across the Danube and demanded Bayezid to govern a Balkan province.  Bayazid gladly accepted his request.  Subsequent events forced Bayazid to abdicate in favor of Salem.  After this decision Bayazid marched towards Damotka but died on the way on 26th May 1512.  Under Bayazid, the Ottoman Empire had become the largest naval power in the Mediterranean region.  On April 25, 1512, Bayazid resigned in favor of his son, Saleem I.
